Network Security Design

Designing a secure computer network is quite simple, you simply don't connect it to the Internet or any other external systems and certainly don't let users access the system.

Alright, if you can't do without connecting the systems to a network then obtain your own full time security team to protect the premises and watch the users.

Whilst these two solutions meet the requirement for a secure system, it is obvious that there are major shortfalls with either option, not least of which are the barriers you have imposed to efficiently carrying out your business.

A network design is secure when your authorised users are provided access to the company data and unauthorised users are prevented access to the data. It sounds so easy; however, let's have a think about passwords. You have decided that everyone on your network needs a password to log on and there should be some basic standards about the length of the password and for how long it will be valid.

Your network administrator opens up the password policy settings on the server and selects that the complex password type be used and that it only be valid for seven days. Some weeks later one of your staff opens their desk drawer and a yellow Post-it® note falls out with their password written on it. The policy looked fine to the administrator but was totally impracticable for your users, as they could not easily remember the rapidly changing and complicated password.

Most people tend to think of network security in terms of stopping Internet hackers and viruses attacking their computers. But do not forget that when the managers and sales team take their laptops out of the office they may also be taking a large amount of business sensitive information on those hard drives. Protecting that data is just as important as blocking the hackers.

We take the time to evaluate the actual risks to your systems and data, protecting that which requires protection and ensuring that a robust recovery process is in place for areas that could be compromised.

By a combination of firewall hardware, anti-virus software and designing the configurations of the software systems in use we can produce a sensible and practicable level of security that can mitigate much of the technical risk to your business. On-going management is then the key to continued success, we keep up to date with all the latest threats and virus attacks, quickly informing our clients of the solutions when new problems arise.

Finally, network security also includes training your staff so that they can recognise risky activities and unusual systems activity, if everyone is looking out for possible virus attacks the problem can be identified must faster.

A integrated network security design matches the actual threat and risk to your business against the cost of installation and on-going management of the protection. We are able to provide the expertise and skill sets to produce cost effective and robust protection for your business.
