APC Power Protection

Power protection for your computers falls into two categories:

• Online spike and surge protection - to stop overloads
• Battery power - to allow you to shutdown the computer properly if the power fails

We recommend online battery backup Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) from the leading UPS manufacturer, American Power Conversion - APC.

APC UPS are supplied with cables and software to connect the protected computer to the UPS, this means that if the power is lost when the computer is switched on, but unattended, the computer will properly close itself down to prevent a system crash.

The exact size of UPS depends upon the actual computer being protected; but, APC produce ranges of UPS to meet almost every business need.

The Back-UPS Pro® series are designed to protect smaller systems, such as individual workstation computers, ISDN PABX and other critical telecoms devices.
The Smart-UPS® series are designed to protect more powerful workstations and servers. They work interactively with the Microsoft BackOffice products to ensure that the server does not suffer data corruption if the power is lost.
	All of these UPS can communicate with the protected computers using the included PowerChute Plus® software. This software can routinely test the UPS, notify network staff when the power is lost (by a mobile phone SMS message) and then safely close down all the applications and services running on the server.

The purchase of an UPS is rather like buying an insurance policy, until you have a disaster you do not appreciate it. We recommend that all business critical data should be stored on an UPS protected computer, this protects the information from corruption due to power fluctuations. To insure that if the computer actually fails you still will need a backup strategy and appropriate systems.
