Veritas Backup Exec
Why bother with a 3rd party Backup product when Microsoft and Novell bundle a backup routine with their operating systems? And why use the Veritas product range?
Those two questions are commonly asked by clients when a Veritas Backup solution is proposed to them, in a nutshell you get what you pay for ! The free backup utilities supplied by Microsoft and Novell are very simplistic and have several shortcomings:
- They do not support data compression on the hardware device, almost halving the tape capacity.
- They do not backup 'in use' files, so applications need to be shutdown when the backup is running.
- They do not support the primary email and database servers (Exchange, SQL Server 2000, Oracle).
- They do not report errors and maintain information on the 'backed-up' status of the systems.
- They cannot backup remote Windows workstations to a tape drive on a central server.
Why use Veritas? Simply because they wrote the backup utilities provided by Microsoft and Novell. This means that they have an in depth understanding of how the operating systems work and their integration with the servers is well proven.
There are three main versions of the Backup Exec™ software, which you use depends upon your network server(s). However, all three products can be controlled and monitored from the same workstation and backed up to the same central tape drive to produce a completely integrated solution.
